Simplifying World Hunger At Forward Hindsight we take this global issue very seriously. It’s not an easy problem to solve but businesses all over the globe can and should make a deliberate effort to start making inroads. From Bogota to Bombay, the stark contrast between the “haves” and “have nots” is shocking. The responsibility lies with businesses like Forward Hindsight to make an impact that is meaningful, and that attacks World Hunger with the most power of all tools - sustainability.
Sustainability
The single biggest cause of world hunger today is lack of a sustainable infrastructure. Two-thirds of the world’s population lives in poverty and hunger while there is enough actual food to feed the world’s population three times over. If you travel 30 miles in any direction from the epicenter of any progressive city in the world there is a 100% chance that you will find extreme hunger and children eating out of garbage cans. In spite of this reality businesses and global conglomerates do little to address the sustainability issue.
Companies have long looked at Corporate Social Responsibility as cutting big checks without requiring defined Return on Purpose. Charity is good but does not solve fundamental cracks in the human eco-system that have continued to increase the imbalance between the rich and the very, very poor.
Sustainability comes from investing in a human supply chain that is not only self-sustaining but grows in terms of population. Most impoverished zones in the world lack basic infrastructure – running water, roads, electricity, education and jobs. Aid drops only go so far and have an unwanted consequence – depriving the poor of self-reliance and sustainability.
This is a long term problem that will take a long term solution. But one has to start somewhere. At Forward Hindsight we are no longer waiting.
Zero Interest Micro-Financing
Micro-financing can truly cure world hunger only if its interest free. This may sound impossible. But if linked back to the corporate or capitalist “next-generation” buyer supply chain it is very achievable. Here’s how this works:
- As the world’s economy continues to break boundaries businesses look for new markets and new customers.
- The next generation of customers/consumers is the bottom of the pyramid - the people who make up two-thirds of the world’s population.
- In order to tap into this new customer base, corporations have to create self-sufficiency first for those who often live on less than one dollar a day.
- The key is to provide interest free micro-financing to fund micro economies that support the conglomerates. These micro economies then foster long term infrastructure.
- This self-sufficiency comes with infrastructure investments, job zones and education. This in return will bring new customers for the next 20, 30 even 50 years.
Consider a US retail conglomerate trying to get a footprint in Bogota, one of the fastest growing economies in South America. In order to realize its full potential the retailer needs to tap in to the millions of people who live in utter dire straits 30 miles from the epicenter of Bogota. On way to achieve this is by funding a micro-economy 30 miles from the epicenter that is integral to the retailer’s supply chain. Simple yes, but it requires courage, imagination and curiosity to implement successfully.
We are actively partnering with organizations who have the foresight to meet this challenge.
